BEESTON CASTLE

Built in 1220 on a rocky outcrop with precipices on three sides it is unusual in not having a keep. The inner bailey is protected by the gatehouse, two towers and a deep ditch dug out od solid rock. It was slighted in the Civil War and was then left to decay.

English Heritage, open all year.
