An irregular hexagonal bailey, formerly surrounded by moat, with ‘D’-plan corner towers and gatehouse started in the 13th century. One tower was rebuilt in octagonal form in 1450. It is much ruined – remains at ground level or only slightly higher - including the foundations of the 15th century hall. It was besieged by Parliamentary forces in 1643, after which it was abandoned.
English Heritage, open all year.
