BOWES CASTLE

Only the large 50 foot high square keep remains of the 1087 castle, built in the corner of the Roman fort Lavatrae which was sited on the highest point in the area. It was rebuilt at the end of the 12th century after siege damage in 1173. It appears that the keep may never have been defended by a curtain wall, just a moat.
