The first building was erected by 1073 and the castle was occupied into the 14th century. By the 16th century it was abandoned and derelict, and now only a part of the circular Norman keep, dating probably from 1100, remains. The original motte is visible in the centre of the remains of the late 11th century curtain wall.
English Heritage, open all year.
