CALDICOT CASTLE

An early Norman motte and bailey castle. The stone walls and the circular keep were added in the early 13th century and the gatehouse in the 14th century. It was restored as a Victorian family home in 1895, set in a gardens with a wooded country Park.

Founded by the Normans, developed as a stronghold in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home, the castle has a romantic and colourful history. Find out about its past with a taped tour, explore the medieval towers and take in the breath-taking views from the battlements. Enjoy a leisurely game of chess or drafts, using giant playing pieces, or relax in the gardens and grounds. The children's activity station offers an insight into castle life in the past and present. Activities include tree and leaf identification and the opportunity to make a castle to take home. The Country Park has picnic tables, barbecue hearths and countryside walks. Caldicot Castle is situated between Chepstow and Newport. From M4 take junction 23a for Magor and B4245 to Caldicot. From M48 take junction 2 for Chepstow and follow A48 (towards Newport) and B4245 to Caldicot. Caldicot Castle is sign posted from A48 and B4245.
