CAREW CASTLE

The motte and bailey erected in 1105 has now vanished, replaced by a tower in the early 13th century. The castle was rebuilt in the late 13th century as a cross between a fortified manor and a castle. It was slighted in the Civil War and abandoned in 1680, but much of it remains in a beautiful setting by the river.

Open April - October.
