DARTMOUTH CASTLE

Dartmouth Castle

The present Dartmouth Castle was built in 1481 with the Old Battery added in 1861 on the site of the 1690 Bulwark. Part of original 14th century walls still remain on a mound above the castle. Close by on the headland above is the site of Gallants Bower Fort, demolished after the Civil War.

Bayards Cove artillery fort (also known as Bearscove) was built in 1509/10 to defend Dartmouth harbour.

Kingswear Castle was built in 1491 opposite Dartmouth Castle and after being abandoned in the mid 17th century it was later converted to a residence. The earthwork fort above it, Mt Ridley, was built in the Civil war. Nearby is Gommerock Fort, a ruined fortified house.
