DOVER CASTLE

The site of Iron age, Roman and Saxon forts - the Roman lighthouse still stands. The inner and outer walls were built up with 41 towers by the Normans and a massive 95' rectangular keep was built in 1172-77. Further towers were added in 1794. Probably the strongest castle in England and one of the most important, it has been in constant use for over 800 years.

There are also the remains of the 1860 Western Heights Fort, on the western side of Dover, and Fort Burgogne, on Castle Hill. Three Henry V111 batteries were also built at the foot of the cliffs - Archcliff Fort, Black Bulwark and Moat's Bulwark.

English Heritage, open all year.
