HURST CASTLE

Built in 1544 on a shingle spit at the western entrance to the Solent. At the centre of the castle is a 12 sided tower surrounded by three semi-circular bastions. Batteries were added to the east and west in 1852 but were replaced in 1870 by newer, much stronger west and east wings. It remained in use until 1933.

English Heritage, open April - October.

Can be reached from Keyhaven, to the south of Lymington.
