Building started in 1106 on a site overlooking the tidal river. It was expanded at the end of the 13th century with the Inner Ward towers and at the beginning of the 14th century with the outer fortifications and gatehouses. The defences included a wall around the town. In a state of ruin by the time of the Civil War, it has now been extensively restored.
Cadw, open all year.
