MARTELLO TOWERS

Originally 101 towers were built to resist Napoleon at the start of the 19th century, stretching from Sussex to Suffolk. 27 were between Aldeburgh and St Osyth Stone, and 74 from Folkstone to Seaford. 45 of the towers still remain, but many are in ruins or have been converted, so only 9 remain in their original condition. They were built of brick, and stood about 30 foot high.

The tower at Dymchurch (No. 24) has been fully restored. Other towers are at Eastbourne (Wish Tower, No. 73), Seaford (No. 74), Rye, Hythe and Folkstone (No 3).

Dymchurch tower is open April - October.
