In the second half of the 19th century Scraesdon and Tregantle Forts and supporting batteries - Garden, Raleigh, Hawkins, Pier Cellars, Penlee, Rame Church, Polhawn, Whitesand Bay and Tregantle Down - were built along the western coast of the The Sound and Whitesand Bay.
