New Tavern Fort was built at Gravesend in 1780 on the opposite bank of the Thames to Tilbury Fort to guard the approach to London.
In 1796 a battery was added at Shornmead to strengthen the Thames defences, and this was developed into one of the first polygonal forts in the 1860's. After 1945 it fell into decay and in the 1960's much of the fort was demolished.
The foundations of Gravesend Blockhouse, built in 1540's can be seen in the grounds of the Clarendon Royal Hotel.
New Tavern Fort is open April - September.
Shornmead Fort is open all year.
