Only one of several towers, 77 foot high, which formed the corners of the 14th century castle which was built on a Saxon site still stands. The remainder have been removed over the years as a trip around the area will reveal farm buildings, houses and a large manor house to be built of the stone. Interestingly there are records from the 17th Century telling of the use of one of the tower bases as a vantage from which the ladies of the area used to watch bear baiting. It was a popular sport it seems. The moat and the old fishponds are still visible, as are remain of the priory nearby which dates from 1170 but is now a chapel of mainly more recent construction.
