The area takes its name from Black Mount, standing 516m (1,693ft) high and forming a central focus for the community. The villages of Dolphinton, Elsrickle, Walston, Weston and Dunsyre surround Black Mount and its smaller sister, White Hill, 438m (1,436ft) in height.
