!steamn1.0co (33879 bytes)How they used to surface Westmorland's road in the days of steam. The steam roller is a Fowler and its driver, Jimmy Dowson, from Knock, is third from the left. When Mr. Dowson retired from the county council roads department in 1963, he bought the roller and took it into retirement with him. Steam from the roller was used to keep the tar molten in the spreader machine.
