The origin of Darien

Have you read the Swallows and Amazons books by Arthur Ransome? Because that is where the
name Darien comes from. In his books Darien is a peak that looks across the lake of his books, and
I have always loved the name. A few years ago I actually visited the Lake District and I set out to
find some of my favourite places from his books, of course the lake he writes about is in fact bits of
three lakes all put together, Windermere which makes up most of the lake, Coniston which is mainly
the area surrounding it, and finally Derwent Water, which is where the peak of Darien comes from, in
reality it is called Friars Crag and it perhaps my favourite place in the world, I remember walking
there for the first time and I just sat there for hours looking out over the lake, lost somewhere in my
mind, and Darien has had a special meaning for me ever since. There are three photographs taken
from Darien here, the first two were taken the first time that I went there, in the first you can see me,
with short hair so it has to be a fair while in the past. The third was taken the last time I was there. I
hope that the beauty of the place can come across to you as it comes across to me.
