The Beautiful Game...

Aston Villa

My father, a Brummie and ardent Villa supporter would forever tell me claret and blue legends of Villa Park (my mother was a Blues supporter but thankfully left the football to Dad).

They say the first team you see play live is the one you go on to support. Sure enough he took me and my older sisters to see Villa play Exeter when we were on holiday. An Andy Gray hat-trick sealed a 3-1 victory and life hasn't been the same since!

Heroes and Villains - Is now the mightiest unofficial Villa site. Dave Woodhall's fanzine made webbish by Mac McColgan. Features a forum and is humorous - something lacking from the other sites. Check out the discussions, logs and the Bard of B6!

The Official Site - Reflects the changing face of Villa. What started as a good place to get up to the minute news is now getting increasingly bogged down in adverts for executive boxes and nights out at the 'Corner Flag'. Has been guilty of incorrect stories (ie Burchill signing for Villa when he was actually signing for Birmingham City). Only good thing is the link through to TicketMaster.

Brighton & Hove Albion

As a child my local team was Brighton & Hove Albion. Between the ages of 7 and 12 I became quite a regular at the Goldstone.

My love faded with not going to matches anymore. Higher prices and football that didn't match them forced my First Division Father away and me with him.

It was rekindled when I got down to Ashton Gate to see the Seagulls beat Bristol City a couple of seasons ago. This was near the start of the bad times: Days only just over of Bill 'Arch Villain' and David 'Badlotti' who sold the ground without finding another and would have seen the club go to the wall.

But oh how things have changed, celebrity fans abound and the Albion are back in Brighton!

And now I am too!

Official Page - Another goodie!

BrightOnLine - More general Brighton site so even if you just fancy going to a club or boozer it's worth a visit!

Other Teams

Football Pages - Recent thing. Links to all 4 National Sides. Catalogues unofficial club sites in England and Scotland. Works best if you subscribe.

News Sources

Football 365 - Dedicated to mainly the English game. Doesn't take itself too seriously nor patronize. My favoured football online zine.

Football Unlimited - From 'The Guardian' - not a paper I rated for its football coverage before. However this site has convinced me with its content including a particularly amusing game section.

Soccernet - Quite good for up to the minute news on English and Scottish teams. Now part of the ESPN Network.

Team Talk - Particularly appealing in that it covers Nationwide clubs as well as the 2 Premierships. Its news is its trump card.
