Irish Fiddle/
Lynne Butler
Lynne’s first workshop will offer an introduction to Irish fiddle playing. You will study a variety of Irish tunes and spend some time looking at how to learn by ear. Not for complete beginners, participants should be able to play simple tunes. A tape recorder or blank tape will be useful.
Mandolin/
Tony Day
The first half of Tony’s workshop will introduce you to new chord shapes and strumming styles. This will be followed by basic ornamentation and hints for playing. For mandolin players who can strum a couple of chords or play a simple time.
"Off The Wall" Bodhrán/
Terry Wisker
Terry’s will be an introductory workshop that aims to get you started along the road to sensitive and effective bodhran playing. It will also offer a glimpse or two of the techniques that can help you raise the standard of your playing above the ordinary. No experience necessary but please bring your own bodhran, especially if it is just hanging on your wall!
World Music & Song/
Anna Tabbush
Anna will teach ensemble percussion and vocal harmonies with material drawn from around the world.Anna is currently studying music at Kingston university, specialising in World music. She has studied African, Brazilian and Cuban percussion as well as Indian tabla and Javanese gamelan. She runs her own choir at university and can be heard on Carolyn Robson’s new CD. For all levels. Participants can sign up for the whole day or just the afternoon.

Fingerpicking Blues Guitar/
Stu Weetman
The workshop will concentrate on the "Piedmont" style of picking, as practised by the likes of Etta Baker, Mississippi John Hurt, and lately, Taj Mahal. Commencing with a simple finger picking pattern, attendees will learn to apply this to a simple 12 bar blues format. Variations on the pattern and the chord voicings within the blues will then be explored. Tunes used will include: Got the Blues, Can't be Satisfied and Railroad Bill. Above beginner but below intermediate. Students need to be able to change quickly and proficiently between G, C, D, Em, and F.
Irish Set Dancing/
John Turner
John’s aim is to cover two sets in this workshop but will take as long as is required so the workshop will be a little flexible. John plans to cover "The Derradda set, from County Mayo" and "The Waltz Cotillion". This session will be a beginners workshop. Little or no experience is required.
Simply Song/
Carolyn Robson
Carolyn will be teaching unaccompanied songs from a wide field including songs from Hertfordshire and Essex, work songs, part songs, African and Balkan harmonies. Note reading is not necessary though music will be provided.

Carolyn has a new CD out called All The Fine Young Men.

For all levels. The morning and afternoon sessions will be different. Participants can sign up for either or both .

Irish Fiddle/

For her second workshop, Lynne will concentrate on style and ornamentation in Irish fiddle playing. using a variety of Irish tunes. Participants will also be introduced to different regional styles of playing. For more confident players who may be beginners to Irish music. A tape recorder or blank tape will be useful.
Bodhrán/

John Joe will be working with fellow bodhran players on a variety of different rhythms and beats, teaching how little nuances of pressure on the skin can make so many groovy sounds. Not for complete beginners
World Music & Song/

American Old Time String Band/
Stu Weetman
With the emphasis firmly on "having fun", Stu will be getting participants to play together as an "old timey" string band. The workshop will be suitable for the following instruments:

Mandolin
Tenor Banjo (in "Irish" tuning GDAE)
Five string banjo
Guitar

Tablature and chord sheets and diagrams will be provided for all instruments. Tuition in the basic technique of "frailing" the five string banjo will also be given.

Note: fiddle players welcome, but will need to be reasonably competent players and readers of sheet music. Tunes used will be:

The ability to change between basic chords (G, D, A, C) will be necessary for the guitar players. The ability to read tablature is desirable but not essential for the other instruments.

5 string banjo and guitar players should have a capo.

Irish Set Dancing/
John Turner
For his second workshop, John will concentrate on "The Newport Set, from County Mayo". Any beginners at the second workshop will find this dance more difficult than the morning session but the Derradda set in the morning has many features in common with the Newport Set due to both coming from the same region of Ireland. The afternoon session will be aimed at a higher level, but anyone coming to

the first workshop will be welcomed at the second workshop

Flute & Whistle/ Sarah Allen & Brian Finnegan of flook logo.gif (4591 bytes) Sarah and Brian will work on technique and breathing, while the more experienced players will have an opportunity to learn about ornamentation and improvisation. The class will be split between beginners and those who have more experience
Folk Guitar/
Ed Boyd of flook logo.gif (4591 bytes)
Ed will also welcome any mandolin and bouzouki players to his class. He will be covering a range of styles and tunings and will teach how to back a traditional tune, including the finger-picking style. Ed will also work on ornamentation. It is recommended that students for this class have a basic understanding of their instrument.
