Final games

Mellor Firsts ended their eventful season on May 10th with the side's biggest win of the campaign, 6-1 away at relegated Burnage Metro. Mellor didn't so much as put a final nail in Burnage's coffin as push it through the furnace doors. Despite restricting players involved in Aerospace's Cup Final the following day to less than a full game and also playing two second teamers and a fourth teamer as sub, Mellor strolled to victory. The goalfest started in the 10th minute with a superb lay-off from Martin Jackson which Dean Hope thundered right footed high into the top left hand corner of the net from 15 yards. Three minutes later Dave Wilkinson fed Jackson from the right wing and another delicate flick found a gap at the near post for number two. Barry Dalby hit a post on 25 minutes but 10 minutes later he rifled into the top of the net after good work from Jackson. On 44 minutes Terry Boon made it 4-0 with a delicious chip over the on-rushing keeper. Some of Mellor's passing was sublime. In the second half Burnage pulled one back with a 25 yarder but Dave Wilkinson drove home his first goal of the season and finally substitute Luke Jubb unselfishly played in Jackson to chip the keeper for number 6. Barry Dalby was Mellor's Man of the Match. The game also saw the introduction as sub of Stephen Jackson, the first time two brothers have represented the First Team since Matt and Danny Partington....who if they weren't joint top scorers were often top joint scorers. Two days earlier Mellor Seconds lost 1-4 to Denton, who thereby took the Division A title. Andy Given scored for Mellor.

NOTE: Remember to report by 10am for Saturday's 5-a-side competition at Wood Lane.
