Fifth Team beats Mellor Select Xl 2-1

Two late goals saw Dunc Bray's Fifth Team overhaul a Mellor Select X1 2-1 at Wood Lane on May 27th. It looked as if the game might end goalless with both defences protecting their respective keepers. The Select Xl took the lead half way through the second period when sub Tom Bright latched onto a Mark Simms' quick throw and drove underneath Johnny Downey. The Fifths carved out some good openings but again lacked a cutting edge. They had a stroke of luck with 12 minutes' left when Paul Goodwin sliced a Dunc Bray corner into his own goal. With five minutes to go a misplaced Mark Simms' pass freed Danny Godfrey on the right wing and his pass was collected by Rob MacInnes who drove the ball high into the top right hand corner of Pete Davey's net for the winner. There were good performances on both sides. For the Select X1 Dave Wilkinson was solid at the back and Paul Telfer linked play well from left back. For the Fifths Joel Lawton made several good interceptions, Rick Monton's coolness in defence was also a big asset and Jack Parr and George Telford shone.
