Mellor Select Xl beat the Fifths 3-0

The Select X1 gained revenge for a 2-1 defeat the previous week by beating the Fifths 3-0 in Mediterranean sunshine. The Fifths passed the ball better than the Select X1 in the first half. But they fell behind shortly before the break when Paul Goodwin, nominally at full back, suddenly popped up in the opposing penalty area. His fierce shot was parried by Jonny Downey but Luke Jubb rammed home the rebound off the far left hand post. Paul Goodwin was injured in the move and played no further part. In the second half the Select X1 played far better and began to control the game. But Rick Monton was very unlucky with a hairline offside decision that ruled out a possible equaliser after George Telford had jinked his way past three tackles. A Tim Phillips' free kick for a Monton foul was then headed home by Select X1 sub Tom Bright. The Fifths had chances. Mike Johnson saved superbly after a rare Dave Wilkinson error allowed Telford a clear run on goal. Andrew Fernie's refusal to give up what looked like a lost cause led to the Select X1's third. Harrying a defender, Fernie got to the byline and pulled back for Luke Jubb to sell two dummies before rifling home from eight yards. Wilkinson headed clear a thunderous free kick from Jack Parr and Johnson made another fine save from John Barlow. But the Fifths seemed to wilt a little in the heat and the Select X1 coasted home comfortably. Parr and Telford stood out for the Fifths but Phil Brown was dogged at left-back. Luke Jubb was the Select X1's best player, with credit to Mike Johnson for several good saves.
