Paul Robinson
Former lacrosse player who has brought all that game's battling qualities
to football but thankfully left his stick at home. Made his debut in 2001-2002
season and quickly claimed the second team left-back's spot as his own.
Brave and quick, Linford Christie couldn't beat him on a Yamaha 650cc
bike. Won Second Team Player of the Year in 2001-2002 season but cut his
hand open against Old Trafford in 2002-03 then suffered a bad knee injury
which required an operation. A management consultant who tours the globe,
he has been known to fly home from New York on a Friday for a game. Nickname:
Robbo. DoB 10.12.64

Matt Rogers
His second spell at the club, he re-joined in the summer of 2003 and
staked an instant claim on a first team spot. Click on his face to see
how he looked in his first incarnation at Mellor. Can play almost anywhere

his first senior goal for Mellor Fourths away at Aldermere in September
2006. Starred as Batman in Mellor's Christmas Party in December 2006.
In 2007-08 he converted to left-back, often winning the Man of the Match

Johnny Townsley
Ex Glossop North End under 19s player who came to Mellor at the start
of the 2007-08 season. A Manchester City fan. He joined the Fifths as
a winger/striker and had an immediate impact. His experience at higher
levels is apparent in his excellent passing and touch. Very quick and
always eager to run at the opposition. Definitely one for the future!
Has an excellent free kick technique. Nickname Ð Johnny.

and Willenhall Town. A midfielder with good vision. Rarely misses training.
DoB 20.2.80
|
 |
Liam Totterdell
One of the quickest players in the club but he doesn't just rely on
pace to score goals. He joined Mellor at the start of 2003-04 season and
after a few appearances in the third team became the second team's most
lethal marksman. He made appearances in the first team before leaving
us for a spell with Stockport Georgians. He returned in July 2008. Nickname:
Tott. DoB 27.2.86
|
 |
Danny Roberts
Flying winger for the Fourths who joined Mellor in 2007-08 season.
Could win the top goalscorer award every season if he took only 30 per
cent of his chances. Needs to develop that ice-in-the-veins approach that
all top scorers have when a chance presents itself. But he scores a few.
|
 |
Shaun Taylor
Joined Mellor in January 2008 and made his debut for the Fourths against
Irlam Steel away in a 1-1 draw. He was part of Pete Jamieson's successful
junior side before starting in open age.

to Old Stoconians. Broke his leg in 2005-06 season. DoB 12.3.86
|
 |
Colin Scott
George Clooney's lost identical twin, he's a goalkeeper who spends
more time on the treatment table than Darren Anderton. However, when he
makes it onto the pitch he's highly efficient. A first team regular in
2003-04, his first season with the club. But dogged by injury he eventually
gave way to Alex Barber. DoB 1.11.68
|
 |
Mark Simms
Striker or wide midfielder with a turn of pace. Scored on his debut
in a second Team friendly against Cheadle Hulme. Appeared mainly
in the fourth team in 2004-05 where his pace and workrate in midfield

in January 2008. DoB 4.1.82

Joe Shervin
Doesn't say much but his football speaks volumes. Rarely wastes a
ball and has excellent control and vision. Season 2001-2002 was his first
in open age. Can play wide midfield or up front. Great temperament, he's
beginning to score goals too. Won the Second Team's (joint) Player of
the Year Award in 2002-03. Has something of the Robert Pires about him
and I don't just mean the wisp of fuzz on his chin. Returned from an 18
month break at the start of the 2006-07 after getting a 2:1 degree in
History at university to play again. Nickname: Joe. DoB 5.12.84.

2007-08 season in the Second Team. Clever footed centre-back who likes
to go forward.

Robin Stroud
Confident utility player who can perform at right back, centre back
or right side midfield. Joined Mellor in the summer of 2005 and made his

DoB 4.1.81
|
 |
Paul Swann
Classy defender, probably best at wing-back who slotted into the first
team after joining Mellor in September 2004. But he also has an eye for
goal. He had a spell with Macclesfield Town , playing in the club's reserves
and also with Glossop North End. He previously played for Poynton. Selected
for the Lancashire & Cheshire League's representative side to play
a South Yorkshire XI in March 2005, the first Mellor player so honoured
for at least 15 years. He followed this up with a further representative
appearance against Liverpool Old Boys League in 2005-06. First Team's
top scorer in 2004-05 and also named Players' Player of the Year. Nickname:
Swanny. DoB 19.8.85
|
 |
Ged Swarbrick
Forward or wide midfielder who scores goals, primarily for the fourth
team in 2004-05. One rocket shot against Newton at Torkington Park will
linger long in the memory. A loyal clubman too. Nickname: Roswell after
the "Roswell Incident", the alleged capture of an alien, because
his thin legs look decidedly extra-terrestrial. Part of the Hellawell
Shield Final team in May 2005. DoB 29.8.78
|
 |
George Telford
Plays in central midfield or sometimes up front for Mellor Fifths.
Quick feet, a turn of pace and a good football brain.
|
 |
Darren Stubbs
Striker for the fourth team, he netted a hat-trick against Old Chorltonians
in December 2003 during a 7-2 demolition and another against Burnage in
April 2004. A good 5-a-side player with a deft first touch. Nickname:
Daz or Phil The Power Stubbs (because his hairstyle resembles darts ace
Phil Taylor). DoB 12.12.79
|
|
 |
Paul Telfer
Skilful and brave full-back who was often to be seen running 80 yards
flat out...if there was a spot kick to be taken. However, following three
misses (two in one game!) the only pens he'll be given from now on will
have ink in. We still let him take corners though. A second team regular,
known as The Rock...after the pub he drinks in following matches. In his
youth a county cross country runner. His motto is "body's a temple"
and so he went on the Ron Atkinson diet in the summer of 2004. He introduced
pies and peas for players after matches. Club treasurer from November
2002 until February 2007. In 2006-07 he took over the joint managership
of the Fourth team with Phil Welsh. Nickname: Telf or The Pieman. DoB
21.11.70.
|
|
|
|
 |
Gavin Thornley
First team goalkeeper, having joined the club - for his second spell
- in September 2004. If you see him sliding down the goal post it's probably
because he works as a part time fireman. Ex Woodley and New Mills. He
has also played for the Lancashire & Cheshire League side. DoB 6.11.78
|
|
 |
Stuart Thorley
First team captain who became first team manager during 2000-2001
season and took the side to a runners-up spot in Division Three and an
appearance in the Stockport Senior Cup Final in 2002-03. He can play in
most positions and is a more than useful keeper. A bad back curtailed
his first team opportunities in 2003-04. Made a comeback in the second
team either in nets or in the back four. A Man City fan so he has a high
pain theshhold. Won the club's Philip Hambleton Trophy for outstanding
work at the end of season presentation in 2003. But needs to improve his
map reading skills after getting lost on the way to play Beechfield in
Salford in February 2006. Nickname: Stu. DoB 1.7.69
