Season 2004-05 heralded a new "golden era" in Mellor's history. Mellor third team secured the Division E title on Saturday March 26th 2005, the first piece of silverware to be won by the club since 1992. The team's record on that date was won 16 and drawn three of 19 games. The title was secured with three league games to spare. Five weeks later on May 3rd at Stockport County's Edgeley Park ground the first won the Stockport Senior Cup for the first time in the club's 82 year history, beating Spurley Hey 2-0. It was the club's third consecutive appearance in the final. The cup was inaugurated in 1896-97. On its base is a list of winners going back to 1970. They include Hyde, Adswood Amateurs, Woodley Athletic, Disley, Mirrlees, Grove Utd, Bramhall and Romiley. Poynton won the trophy three times in four years between 1999 and 2002. In 2005-06 the club decided to enter the Cheshire Amateur Cup and reached the last 16 of that competition.

Amid the kind of secrecy normally reserved for This Is Your Life, Mellor FC first team assistant manager John Bellis was lured away from his usual Friday night 5-a-side on March 24th 2004 to attend what looked like a pleasant but rather routine dinner at the Deanwater Hotel, Woodford. El Bel, however, was shocked when he found himself among a handful of guests honoured by the 200 strong audience for their involvement in and contribution to local sport. At its 30th annual dinner Stockport Sports Council named John Soccer Sports Personality of the Year. Despite his award John will be expected to continue picking up muddy kit, collecting subs, sweeping the dressing rooms and generally running around after players!
