Blindée Cavalerie Métropolitaine

The Metropolitan Armoured Cavalry compose the bulk of the armoured regiments of the Armée de la Manouvre. They are mostly recruited from mainland France, although recruits from other parts of the Empire are increasingly common in the ranks. Most of these units have long and proud histories, usually stretching back to horsed cavalry units of the Napoleonic Era and earlier. The majority of the units are regulars but some are 'conscript' short service volunteers. It used to be common practise to modify the regimental name to signify that if the unit was para-roled, or was equipped with hovertanks or groundtanks. However this has fallen somewhat out of favour in recent years.

Régiment de Spahis

A part of the Metropolitan Cavalry, the Régiment de Spahis are descended from North African cavalry units raised during France's first colonial period. Although they have been entirely recruited from mainland France for centuries they retain some of the old dash and trappings and forebears. From the mid-2030's onwards large numbers of France's naturalised North African populations have served in the ranks of the RS. The regiments have a somewhat complicated relationship with the Spahis Algériens.

Blindée Cavalerie Belgique

These regiments are recruited almost entirely from France's influential Belgian Département and have served with the French Army since the Franco-Belgian Union in the first decade of the third millennium. Despite the bitter struggle for Flemish Independence these units remain a valued part of the Army and have a reputation of being ultra-loyalists.

Infanterie Métropolitaine

The bulk of the Armée de la Manouvre and the Armée Territoriale de la France is made up of Metropolitan infantry regiments recruited from European France.

Régiments d' Infanterie

These units are the old French Line Infantry regiments that have survived to the present day. They are divided into a regular (usually the I Batallion) and several Short Service Volunteer battalions. The CSV battalions provide the entirety of the Armée Territoriale de la France's infantry strength. All the battalions are infantry unless noted otherwise.

Groupement Chasseurs

These battalion sized units are the descendants of the French Légère/Chasseur à Pied regiments, and are such see themselves as the heirs to the light infantry tradition of the Voltigeurs who paved the way for Napoleon's military domination of Europe. After World War 3, the Chasseurs were transformed into all-regular units and fought alongside the Légion as part of the French effort to re-build Europe and the western hemisphere. As such they always saw themselves as a step above the more mundane RI units, and attitude that continues today. It is revealing that the Chasseurs provide the only metropolitan infantry fighting on Aurore.

Chasseurs Alpins

These units are France's mountain infantry split from the other Chasseur à Pied in the late 19th Century, that traditionally have guarded the Pyrenees and the mountainous border with Italy. They maintain the sense of being an élite, common to most nation's mountain troops and man the crack 27e Division Alpins in the FAR. The 159e RIA is a regular infantry regiment that was converted some time in the past and except for having an CSV battalion is identical to the other units.

9e Zouaves

The Zouaves, like the Spahis are a hold-over from the days of the first French colonial empire. They also were once a colonial regiment, but soon recruited entirely from the French pied noire colonist community in Algeria. They later would recruit from mainland France instead, especially after Algeria gained her independence. The 9e Zouaves today are a conventional regular infantry regiment with a colourful history and uniform, and many of its soldiers come from mainland France's long-established and wealthy North African descended community.

Infanterie Belgique

These are units of the old Belgian Army that continue to exist within the French Army of 2300. They have as long and proud histories and traditions as any units in the French Army. The somewhat bitter War of Flemish Independence combined with the poor performance of the Belgian Division against the Germans in the Ardennes has caused a problem of organisation and moral within these units. Half of the regiments passed into the control of the new Flemish State, and the remainder were purged of non-French speakers. These units, especially the regulars are keen to prove their loyalty to France.

Troupes de Marine

The TM are a group of regiments incorporating cavalry, infantry, artillery, engineers and paratroopers who have a wide range of responsibilities. The Marines are frequently encountered off-Earth, as they, along with the Légion Étrangère have the least political baggage involved with their deployment. The TM have arrived from a variety of sources, old fashioned ship-board marines, Colonial units from France's first overseas empire, a regiment of WW2 Chadian volunteers, Belgian Para-Commanders and now units from Tirane.

In addition to the forces mentioned below the Marines provide garrisons for several French territories on Earth and security elements for some French outposts. In many ways the TM are used in a similar fashion to the Légion, except they are generally thought to have more discipline and subtlety than the Légionnaires.

Légion Étrangère

The famed Légion Étrangère has a variety of regiments and is similar in many ways to the all-French Troupes de Marine and share many roles with them. However the Légion retains a reputation as being the shock-troops of the French State, sending the Légion is often part of a political message.

Troupes Aeroportées

The TAP are France's airborne forces and include all of the parachute regiments, officially the TIS are a sub-set of the TAP. Increasingly though the TAP are composed only of the paras bleus of the RCP and the units known as the paras Africain. The RCP have their roots in parachute and shock units established from the Free French by both the British and Americans during World War 2. They are metropolitan units and originally wore blue berets (now red), hence the nickname (similarly Légion paras are paras vertes, Marine paras are paras rouges). The 10e RCP was created from crack Nouvelle Provençal colonial units when that colony gained Departement status. Currently the RCP man the two core based Parachute Divisions.

The TAP also includes the 'African Paras' who include a number of Para and Commando units recruited from the various African Departements, the most famous of whom are the Senegalese Paras. These units, along with Légion and Marine infantry, man the rapid reaction DAM in the African Armies.

Troupes d' Intervention Spatial

The TIS is composed of units drawn from the Marines and Foreign Legion sections of the Troupes Aeroportées. They are the true élite of the French Army, possessing exceptional skill and motivation whilst receiving the latest equipment. These forces include the famous REP's of the Légion Étrangère, the similarly renowned Marine Paras and the Para-Commandos whose unique identity has survived 300 years since the Belgian Army was subsumed into the French. The Para-Commandos still wear the 'Winged Dagger' and Commando daggers (for 1 & 2 Bns) respectively, celebrating their WW2 roots, allowing them to lord their 'seniority' over the other units.

Commandement de Troupes Spéciale

The CTS is the body that controls the French Armed Force's special forces units. Unlike other western units they have no responsibility from Counter Terrorist operations. Instead they concentrate on long range reconnaissance, small unit raiding, counter-insurgency and other irregular forms of warfare. These units are drawn from a variety of sources, including the TAP and the French Navy's elite commando units.
