Bremer et al 1998

Bremer K., Chase M. W. and Stevens P. F. (eds.) 1998.  An ordinal classification for the families of flowering plants.  Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden 85 (4): 531-553.

The classification presented in the above paper is a synthesis of work in a number of institutes on the examination of the genetic relationships of flowering plants using gene sequences.  This new classification does not overturn all previous classifications based on plant morphology but has led to some unexpected conclusions about the relationship of certain plant families.  Further work using gene sequencing can be expected to produce significant changes at the genus and species level as well.
