Aspidistra lateralis
Accepted name Aspidistra lateralis Tillich. Feddes Repert. 116(5-6): 320 (335, 338; fig. 3d). (2005). Synonyms Distribution Vietnam (Thua Thien) Description Rhizome: epigeous, very short to nearly upright, diameter ca. 5 mm, raised by dense, stiff stilt roots ca. 20 cm above ground level. Leaves: [in tufts ?] to ca. 45 cm; cataphylls pale brown, up to 6 cm long; petiole 10 - 20 cm; lamina lanceolate, stiff upright, 20 - 25 cm long x 6 - 7 cm wide, green, some leaves with pale spots, base cuneate, often distinctly asymmetrical, midrib notched adaxially, protruding abaxially, secondary veins indistinct.
Peduncle: 0.5 - 1.5 cm long; flowers solitary, borne horizontally.
Perianth [Perigone]: widely infundibuliform, 15 mm long x 30 mm diameter; tube green outside, pale yellow inside; lobes 6 or 8, purple, widely ovoid, divaricate, distinctly biseriate, smooth.
Stamens: 6 or 8, positioned at upper end of tube, their tips visible from above between tube wall and margin of stigma, anthers sessile, 4 mm long.
Pistil: mushroom-shaped, 10 mm long; style 4 - 5 mm long, stigma diameter 12 mm, cream-white, flat; ovary slightly conoid.
Fruit: undescribed.
Phenology: Flowers May - June.
