Hedychium spicatum 'Singalila' BSWJ 2303 images

Hedychium spicatum BSWJ 2303 is a very floriferous form collected by Crûg Farm in autumn 1994 on the Singalila Ridge, the great spur of high ground that runs south from Kanchenjunga forming a natural border between Sikkim and Nepal.

This is a very distinctive form of
Hedychium spicatum. It has large spikes of numerous, laxly held, mid-sized flowers. The tissue of the flower seems to lack the substance of other forms of Hedychium spicatum and the labellum curls downwards as soon as the flower opens. The undersides of the young leaves have a reddish-bronze flush that I have not seen, or at least not nearly as strongly, on any other Hedychium spicatum. In their 2005 catalogue Crûg Farm gave this plant the cultivar name 'Singalila' in recognition of its distinctness from other forms of Hedychium spicatum
