This is one of several Indonesian banana cultivars given a
spurious species name by Takenosin Nakai. Nakai says of it in his idiosyncratic
English, "Pisang Rengang (means spread fingered banana) belongs
to a lowest class which can be eaten in raw. Plant is dark green and very pruinose.
Its axis of inflorescence stretches nearly horizontally, and its flowers and fruits
spread open like the leaves of bamboo do, from which it received the name of Pisang
Rengeng. The orgin of this banana is quite unknown, and belongs to rather rare
garden banana." |
