The World Checklist of Monocotyledons gives Musa banksiana Kurz, J. Agric. Soc. India, n.s., 5: 164 (1878), orth. var. as a synonym of Musa banksii F.Muell., Fragm. 4: 132 (1864) which is given as the accepted name.

Eumusa (Musa) 1

Champion 1967 : 9, Cheesman 1948 d : 155, Kurz 1877, Index Kewensis, WCM.

Cheesman writes that "M. banksiana is only a name in the synoptic key included in Kurz's unfinished article of 1878 [sic] : it can safely be regarded as a synonym, for it would be just like Kurz to write "banksiana" for "banksii"". Cheesman had a low opinion of Kurz as a scientific writer (well, none of us is perfect!) but acknowledged his abilities as a field botanist and insights into the relationship of the bananas.
