Comments Published as Musa emasculata the "x" is added to indicate its presumed hybridity.  In this context Musa x paradisiaca should not be read as implying that Musa x emasculata is Musa (AAB group) 'French' plantain, Cheesman's identification of Musa x paradisiaca L. (Cheesman 1948).  However, Gerda Rossel has identified Musa x emasculata as a Musa (AAB group) 'Horn' plantain type.

The specific epithet reflects the abortive male inflorescence that characterises 'Horn' plantains.

The information at WCM cannot be reconciled with Gerda's identification.
