The World Checklist of Monocotyledons gives Musa emasculata De Briey ex De Wild., Miss. de Briey Mayumbe: 306 (1920) as a synonym of Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheesman, Kew Bull. 2: 101 (1947 publ. 1948) which is listed as the accepted name.

References De Wildeman 1920, Index Kewensis, Rossel 1998 (Appendix B : 38 no. 56).
Comments Published as Musa emasculata the "x" is added to indicate its presumed hybridity.  In this context Musa x paradisiaca should not be read as implying that Musa x emasculata is Musa (AAB group) 'French' plantain, Cheesman's identification of Musa x paradisiaca L. (Cheesman 1948).  However, Gerda Rossel has identified Musa x emasculata as a Musa (AAB group) 'Horn' plantain type.

The specific epithet reflects the abortive male inflorescence that characterises 'Horn' plantains.

The information at WCM cannot be reconciled with Gerda's identification.
