Musa sp. "Yunnan" = Musa itinerans

MYunnan001 This composite image shows the male buds of:
  1. Musa itinerans flowering in a field collection (probably at the Phu Ho Fruit Research Centre) in Vietnam.  Image provided by Markku Häkkinen.
  2. VN1-054 flowering in a field collection (probably at the Phu Ho Fruit Research Centre) in Vietnam.   Image provided by Markku Häkkinen.
  3. "Yunnan"   flowering for the first time in cultivation in the Harry P. Leu Gardens, Orlando, Florida.  Image provided by Eric Schmidt.

From this composite image it can be seen clearly that VN1-054 is a different species to Musa itinerans.  It can also be seen that "Yunnan" is the same as Musa itinerans, the differences in the male bud in 1 and 3 being trivial and due to cultural and climatic differences.

MYunnan002 Well grown vegetative plant of "Yunnan" in the garden of Marc Vissers, Belgium.   The waxy pseudostem and blue-ish hue to the plant, although different to the type description of M. itinerans, seems typical of the appearance of the plants in cultivation in Europe.

More images of "Yunnan" in cultivation are accessible via the Musa itinerans page.
