Musella lasiocarpa images

Musella lasiocarpa flowering sequence of plant in cultivation in UK

15/11/03 - day 530 -  The fruit eventually began to ripen in late autumn turning slightly yellow. When ripe the fruit dehisced and the white pulpy mass fell out. This was something of a surprise as I have not seen this behaviour reported before for Musella fruit. It is rather rare behaviour in the Musaceae in general.

This image shows an empty fruit on the left, the inside of the skin turning purplish with age. To the right is a freshly dehisced fruit with the white pulp showing. The dehiscence was rather irregular as can be seen here.
