STABILISING The variety of quartz known as jasper is a heterogeneous mass of micro-crystallised quartz, which is heavily pigmented with colourful minerals. The colours of jasper are mainly due to iron and are usually yellow, red, brown, black or green. The green jaspers, when of a uniform light shade, are often known as prase, and the darker green as plasma. Basanite is a velvety-black type of jasper. When plasma contains bright red spots it is commonly called bloodstone or heliotrope. Much petrified wood (fossil) is jasper, the previously existing wood fibre having been replaced molecule by molecule by silica in the form of jasper. Mookaite is Australian jasper with a dark brown coloration. Jasper is of worldwide occurrence. It was said to be one of the stones used in the breastplate of the high priest. The term jasper is very ancient and comes from the Orient. It was used in Egypt: sacred scarab amulets were carved from red jasper as a symbol of eternal life. Red jasper is good for clearing blocks in the liver and bile ducts. It energises the solar plexus, sacral and root chakras. It is a good, slow, steady healing stone.
