Medical

For the past few years, my primary focus has been on medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, particularly the physiology of pain and analgesic drugs. Confidentiality agreements preclude my disclosing specific details, but many projects have involved producing academic papers and reports of meetings, conferences and symposia (the more enjoyable ones being overseas!). I have also written product support literature, training manuals, advertisements and briefing materials for medical representatives. In some cases this has required extensive research into the relevant academic topics.

Recent work includes reviewing reports on the pre-clinical testing of a wide range of potential therapeutic agents, summarising the pre-clinical testing of a new oncology drug, reporting on the development of international guidelines for treating cancer pain, writing chapters for a textbook on opioids, creating PowerPoint presentations on anaemia in cancer patients (for key opinion leaders to give at workshops and conferences), and writing several papers on combination analgesics and transdermal drug delivery.

The main clinical areas dealt with have been:
  • pain and analgesia
  • oncology
  • anaemia
  • vaccines
  • cardiovascular disease
  • antibiotics
  • renal disease

Dental

For almost a decade I contributed to The Probe, a journal distributed to all dental surgeons in the United Kingdom. Having been given a free hand, my articles embraced subjects as diverse as dental politics, practice management, remuneration, clinical advances and legislation.

In addition to developing an audio-visual presentation for the General Dental Council and editing a book on dental implantology, I wrote much of the press kit for the launch of Ribena Tooth Kind soft drinks and contributed a chapter on oral health to the Handbook of Pharmacy Health Education, published by The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. For the same organisation, I completed a series of articles on dentistry for the continuing professional development of pharmacists, which appeared in The Pharmaceutical Journal.
