We recommend you extract the zipped files for the current edition into a separate directory on your computer ie: c:\edges\9712 (for the Christmas 1997 edition on a typical PC). * please substitute c: for your drive letter if different

To avoid overwriting your own files please ensure that the destination directory is unique to your system.

Also please note that If you unzip successive editions to the same directory the preceeding edition will be overwritten

For windows users who are archiving our magazines in the recommended folders we have prepared an Archive Index file enabling you to navigate through the offline magazines from your desktop. (The Archive Index file will be opened in a new window, close the window after saving the file to your desktop by clicking on the x in the top right of the browser window and you will be returned to this page.)This file should be viewed afresh with each issue release and saved onto your windows desktop each time as Edges Magazines.
Any issue of our magazines which you have archived can then be viewed by a simple double click on this file from the windows desktop. (as always please make sure you do not connect to the Internet and also if you are using IE4 that it is in offline mode)

Although the following notes are as detailed as possible we cannot be held responsible for any misinterpretation, please read on only after agreeing to this stipulation

Step by Step approach(for basic guidance only):

  1. Ensure you have an appropriate unzipping programme on your computer. Winzip is a good example which can be downloaded free from http://www.winzip.com

  2. Having made sure you have an unzipping program you are now in a position to download the zipped magazine file.
Before you do please bear in mind that the size of file you are to download is approx 230Kbs, this is not an overlarge download but we recommend you download on Saturday or Sunday mornings (UK time) for faster access.
OK now click on the appropriate zip file and it will be dowloaded into your PC. Now proceed to step 3 unless you are using Winzip's Internet Browser Support add on
If you have the Internet Browser Support Add On , a free add-on to winzip available from http://www.winzip.com, a small dialogue box will open informing you how long you have been using the evaluation version. At this stage click on I agree and follow these instructions from 4c.
You will still be connected to the Internet but it will only take a couple of seconds to complete the operation.

  3. Your browser will then most likely ask you what you want to do with this file, at this stage we sugest you choose save it to disk and disconnect from the internet to complete the process.

  4. The following example assumes you are using winzip 6.3.

    a) Locate the downloaded file and double click it.

    b) A small dialogue box will open informing you how long you have been using the free evaluation version of winzip, click on I agree.

    c) A window will open listing all the individual files the zip file contains. Click on the large extract button

    d) Another new window opens. In the extract to box of this window we suggest you type the address for the recommended directory as detailed above. (for the Christmas edition it would be c:\edges\9712) Ensure the All Files button is selected and press the extract button in this new window. If the directories do not already exist on your computer winzip will create them.

For other unzipping programmes you may have to create the directories (or folders) yourself and paste the zip file in prior to extracting. Whichever program you use, with a little practise, you'll soon get the hang of it.

If in any doubt whatsoever please consult the relevant documentation for your unzip software

  5. For windows95 users who are archiving our magazines in the recommended folders please jump to step six for details of the Archive Index file.

Otherwise to view the magazine using the suggested example, first launch your internet browser ensuring that you don't get connected to the Internet. (If using Internet Explorer 4 ensure you are in working offline mode.)
You now need to load the index page. Click on file in the upper left of your browser then on the drop down box click on open (for internet explorer) or open page (for netscape).
In the box that appears type the address of the index file. In the above example it would be c:\edges\9712\index.htm.
The index page of the magazine should then load enabling you to navigate through the magazine. If all OK you can now delete the zip file to keep things nice and tidy and read your offline copy of Edges at your leisure.

  6. For windows95 users who are archiving our magazines in the recommended folders we have prepared an Archive Index file enabling you to navigate through all the offline magazines easily from your desktop. This file should be viewed afresh with each issue release and saved each time onto your windows desktop.

Its a simple matter of viewing the Archive Index File and clicking on file in the top left of your browser followed by Save As.. . Ensure you are saving the file to your desktop folder and name it ie. Edges Magazine then save. After saving the file to your desktop, merely close the window by clicking on the x in the top right of the browser window and you will be returned to this page.)
All subsequent updates of this file should be saved in the same way to the same named file
Any issue of our magazines which you have archived on your PC can now be viewed by a simple double click on this file. (as always please make sure you do not connect to the Internet and also if you are using IE4 that it is in offline mode
