WE
WORK AS A TEAM Marie reflects on what it is like to work for THOMAS, the organization that promotes Edges |
Several people have said to me they couldn't work in such a place, it would be too distressing.
It is very difficult to convey to others the determination, hope, frustration and humour that are the everyday fabric here at T.H.O.M.A.S.
The determination is that of the individual who wants to come off drugs. Everyone at T.H.O.M.A.S. is similarly determined that every support is given to help them achieve their aim. Hope is in the shape of the many friends and supporters of EDGES and T.H.O.M.A.S. Those who send financial donations, those who come to work in the Drop-In, those who give of their time and effort and the many who write just to express their support and encouragement.
Frustrations are, as for many organisations, limited resources.
For those involved in T.H.O.M.A.S. and EDGES, it is very much a team effort. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, but the goal is the same - to help those who are marginalised, improve the quality of their lives, be it a hot meal, advice, support or advocacy.
When Fr. Jim starts by saying, How are you fixed & you know the rest of the sentence is going to ask for something to be done outside the hours usually worked. So why do I do it?
The spirit of T.H.O.M.A.S.
is addictive. Seeing success such as Seans imminent departure to
college, is a driving force. There are many others who could do what Sean
has done. That is why I work for T.H.O.M.A.S., that is why Im
determined to come to grips with Windows 95, and that is why Im
determined to do my little bit to improve the quality of life to Those on
the Margins of A Society.
