Mother Teresa's life will live
on in the Missionaries of Charity, the Order she founded. Some years
ago, whilst visiting London, she wept at the sight of so many people
living out on the streets. She never believed this could be possible
in a nation like our own. What struck her most of all was the
isolation of people whom she met. Edges pays tribute to her life.

THE COST OF POVERTY, a
special research commissioned by Channel 4 last year speaks about
marginalized groups being left behind. It went on to stress the
following: No sections of society are totally immune from the risk of
poverty. Unemployment and involuntary early retirement now extend to
middle class families and nearly all occupational groups. The growth
of flexible employment practices - short term contracts and
so on - is found in nearly all occupations. Unemployment amoung recent
graduates has risen. the incidence of lone parenthood has grown in all
social classes. And as inequality has grown there is now more to
lose when misfortune occurs. The income drop on unemployment, sickness
or lone parenthood is much larger than it used to be. the stakes are
higher. The growth in inequality has therefore produced levels of
stress and anxiety throughout society, notably in connection with
labour market insecurity.
