  UNEMPLOYED HELPED BACK TO WORK

20 unemployment hit squads will be announced by Gordon Brown. The Employment Service will lead this initiative.

The squads will gather information about people and jobs were unemployment is high.Grants for transport will be made available to help people get to work, Andy Westwood,Director of Research and Development at the Employment Policy Institute, said the following,"Grants are welcome but the real solution is to create opportunities within deprived areas. It is not necessarily how you bus people into Canary Wharf but how you create those opportunities within Canary Wharf into Newham".He goes on to say, "You can contribute to the regeneration of areas by increasing the income of previously unemployed people. But if you help people access jobs outside deprived areas they may just move out."

Edges magazine welcomes this new initiative from the Treasury.
