PRISON IS NOT WORKING

Edges Magazine believes prison is not the appropriate place for every criminal. Yet it is still the unfortunate reality for over 60,000 of our citizens, with over 40,000 staff to ensure that those sent by the courts are looked after with fairness and humanity.

Our organisation believes society has a significant part to play in rehabilitating the ex-offender. We are encouraged by the various drug rehabilitation programmes operating within the prison system. Nevertheless, the greatest difficulty is giving support to the ex-offender on release from prison. We would like to see more community based initiatives to be made available
THE CELL (part II)
Six months clean
Half a year
No junk, no beer.
No degradation
Humiliation.
No homelessness
Or sleepless nights
No drug crazed dealers
Looking for a fight.

Now I'm at college
Studying hard
Surfing the internet,
Got my library card.
Talking to school kids
'Bout the dangers of drugs,
"You don't wanna' end up
like one of them mugs!"
I've broke down the doors
To the cell, and to me
Talk about my feelings,
And about being free.
