I STARTED TAKING DRUGS AT 13.
Ian Howarth is a Client in our Project.

Since coming to the T.H.O.M.A.S. Organisation I have received a lot of help and support. I feel more confident now with regards to staying off drugs. I want to stay off drugs now and I'm in the right place to do that.

I started taking drugs at thirteen, using alcohol, aerosols, cannabis and speed. I did that until I was eighteen. Then I went onto heroin which led me to lose my job and everything I owned. I ended up on methadone and tranquillisers. I stayed on methadone longer than I was on heroin. Nearly seven years went by and all the time I was on a large amount of methadone.

I got in touch with T.H.O.M.A.S. and started coming to the group meetings with Barry, one of the counsellors. I started cutting down on the methadone, then I could see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I started taking drugs because I couldn't cope with life and deal with my emotions. I have never felt like I have fitted in. When I was at school I was always very quiet. I didn't really get involved with any of the lessons and my attendance was quite poor towards the end. I always felt like I was never as good as any one else.

My life for the last ten years has been non-existent. I became more or less a recluse, just going out to get my drugs and that was about it. Being sat in all the time was very boring towards the end. I tried not to think about it too much, I just took more drugs to forget about it. In the future all I want to be is happy.
