T.H.O.M.A.S. EMBRACING A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY

In this edition of Edges I share my recent visit to Northern Ireland where I had the opportunity to meet several people who show promising signs of hope in a place that has become accustomed to hatred and conflict between two communities.Fwad Bhatti and Madu Pandya have also visited Northern Ireland looking at how the Province has been able to deal with conflict.

In recent months we have seen the racial tensions on the streets of some of our towns and cities.Edges Magazine and the T.H.O.M.A.S. Organisation has a keen interest in developing links with our colleagues from the ethnic communities who work with exclusion. In March 1999 I was invited to join the Rt.Hon.Jack Straw and Keith Hallewell on a platform to address a conference on drugs. It focused on the problems experienced in the Asian Community. This May I was again invited to address a Muslim conference looking at the problems of drug addiction. It is my aim to set up a new committee within T.H.O.M.A.S.with representatives from the Asian Community who can work with us on an initiative, which will focus on the problems of drug addiction in the community.
