Drugs Are History For Me

Liam

I started taking drugs at the age of 16. Cannabis was the first drug I used. But rapidly, from 16 to 17, I jumped straight to heroin, cocaine and methadone. And that’s continued for the last ten years, a constant battle of methadone use and heroin abuse, leaving Blackburn to get away from it, coming back and being in the same position again. Eventually I broke the cycle- it was make or break.

It was the time to carry on and die, or stop and make a clean life and a clean start. Luckily I had enough guts inside me, and enough help around me. The help is there for people if you really want it, and I made the break. In the two years since I’ve stopped, my life has changed so much. So many doors have opened, and so much good has come into my life, just through being helpful to others, and others being helpful to me. It has meant so much to me, and you’ll get so much more from being clean than you will from being in a cycle of self destruction, and self hate. My main help in getting myself clean was the Community Drug Team in Blackburn. Breaking the cycle of meeting with people who take drugs, not associating with them and cutting myself off was really important too. My family, friends and doctor have all helped, and as people see you making an effort, the help arrives without you even asking for it. People are there when you need them, and you realise that there’s more to life than running around trying to get money for a bag of gear.
