IN & OUT OF HOSTELS

Carl shares his thoughts:  : I’ve been homeless over the last few years. I’ve been in and out of hostels and sleeping on the streets. Recently I’ve got my act together and I now have my own place. I haven’t got a job. My life is going alright at the moment. It has its ups and downs like everyone else’s.

I became homeless because I was getting beat up by my step-dad when I was younger. I lived on the streets and several hostels. It’s mostly because there’s not enough places around to help young people out. The hostels are alright. Some of them are rough but its better than sleeping on the streets.

I’ve been to Sheffield, Leeds, Stockport, Nottingham, Preston and Blackpool. I’ve been from Scotland down to Plymouth. I started travelling when I was about seventeen and I’ve been all over the country. The only main place I haven’t been is London.

Over the last few years travelling about has been hard because I haven’t had anywhere to stop. When I was younger it was a lot harder than it is now. When you’re young sometimes you can’t get housing benefit. Now I’m a bit older I’ve got more experience. It’s not very nice living on the streets and travelling around. The people I’ve met have always been friendly because they were in the same situation as me and they knew where I was coming from. With social workers they can only understand to a certain degree because they haven’t been there. They always think they know what they’re on about.

I’m on sickness benefit at the moment and I’ve got my own flat. I find it hard to get furniture and stuff for the flat. I have started to get help from different people, which is great. Some housing associations will help you out with the furniture. If they do help you out they charge you a bit extra on top of your rent, so you’re better going out and finding your own furniture.

The hostels are quite good but they’re mostly for young people but I can understand that because they haven’t got the experience.

My hobbies are general sports like running, football, walking and cycling. I like most music as long as it’s not classical or heavy rock. I like dance music.
