"And in the fourteenth day of the
first month is the passover of the LORD. And in the fifteenth
day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be
eaten. In the first day shall be an holy convocation; ye shall
do no manner of servile work therein" (Numbers 28:16-18).
"Observe the month of Abib, and keep
the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the
LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night. Thou
shalt therefore sacrifice the passover unto the LORD thy God, ...
Thou shalt eat no leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat
unleavened bread therewith, even the bread of affliction; for thou
camest forth out of the land of Egypt in haste: that thou mayest
remember the day when camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the
days of thy life. And there shall be no leavened bread seen
with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither shall there any thing
of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain
all night until the morning. Thou mayest not sacrifice the
passover within any of thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth
thee: But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to
place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even,
at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth
out of Egypt. And thou shalt roast and eat it in the place
which the LORD thy God shall choose: and thou shalt turn in the
morning, and go unto thy tents. Six days thou shalt eat
unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly
to the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work therein" (Deuteronomy
16:1-8).
"Then they killed the passover on
the fourteenth day of the second month" (2 Chronicles 30:15).
"And the children of the captivity
kept the passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month. ...
And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity,
and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the
filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of
Israel, did eat, and kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days
with joy" (Ezra 6:19-22).
Christ Our Passover
"Now the first day of the feast of
unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where
wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? And he
said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master
saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house
with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had
appointed them; and they made ready the passover" (Matthew
26:17-19).
"And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the
passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go
and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? ... And his disciples
went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto
them: and they made ready the passover" (Mark 14:12-16).
"Now the feast of unleavened bread drew
nigh, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests and
scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number
of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the
chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them ...
Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be
killed. And [Jesus] sent Pater and John, saying, Go and
prepare us the passover, that we may eat ... and they made ready the
passover" (Luke 22:1-13).
"Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and
scourged him ... Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto
them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find
no fault in him ... Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no
fault in him ... And it was the preparation of the passover, and
about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!"
(John 19:1,4,614).
"For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7b).
The Lord's Death on the Cross
"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from
helping me, and from the words of my roaring? ... But I am a worm,
and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All
they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they
shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver
him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him ... Be not far
from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many
bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring
lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of
joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to
my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For
dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me:
they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones:
they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them,
and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O
LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul
from the sword; my darling
[an only child] from the
power of the dog ... For he hath not despised not abhorred the
affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him;
but when he cried unto him, he heard ... They shall come, and shall
declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he
heath done this" (Psalm 22).
"As many were astonished at thee;
his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than
the sons of men: So shall he sprinkle
[cleanse from sin]
many nations; ... He is despised and rejected of men; a man of
sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces
from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he
hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem
him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. But he was wounded
for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the
chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are
healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned
every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity
of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he
opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and
as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare
his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living:
for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he
made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death;
because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his
mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him
to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he
shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of
the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the
travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall
my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their
iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the
great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he
hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the
transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession
for the transgressors" (Isaiah 52:13-53:12).
"And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being
interpreted, The place of a skull. And they gave him to drink
wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. And when they
had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them,
what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and
they crucified him. And the superscription of his accusation
was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. And with him they
crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his
left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was
numbered with the transgressors. And they that passed by
railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that
destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, Save thyself,
and come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests
mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others;
himself he cannot save. Let Christ the King of Israel descend
now form the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were
crucified with him reviled him. And when the sixth hour was
come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi,
Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God,
my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And some of them that
stood by, when they heard it, said Behold, he calleth Elias.
And one ran and filled a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a
reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether
Elias will come to take him down. And Jesus cried with a loud
voice, and gave up the ghost. And the veil of the temple was
rent it twain from the top to the bottom. And when the
centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out,
and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God"
(Mark 15:22-39).
"And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary,
there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right
hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father,
forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his
raiment, and cast lots. And the people stood beholding. And
the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let
him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. And the
soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar,
and saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And
a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and
Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of
the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be
Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked
him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same
condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due
reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And
he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy
kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To
day shalt thou be with me in paradise. And it was about the
sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the
ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the
temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a
loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and
having said thus, he gave up the ghost ... Thus it is written, and
thus it behooved Christ to suffer" (Luke 23:33-46; 24:46a).
"And he bearing his cross went forth
into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the
Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with
him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate
write a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS
OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS ... Then the soldiers, when they
had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to
every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without
seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among
themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall
be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted
my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots ...
Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the
scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was
set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar,
and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus
had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his
head, and gave up the ghost" (John 19:17-30).
"The Jews therefore, because it was
the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on
the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day) besought
Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken
away. Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first,
and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they
came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his
legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side,
and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw
it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith
true, that ye might believe. For these things were done, that
the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be
broken. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on
him whom they pierced" (John 19:31-37).
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).
"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he
was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the
scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
"[T]he blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" (1
John 1:7b).
The Lord's Resurrection
"For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly;
so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart
of the earth" (Matthew 12:40).
"In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day
of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the
sepulchre. And behold, there was a great earthquake: for the
angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back
the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was
like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of
him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. And the
angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that
ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is
risen, as he said" (Matthew 28:1-6).
"And when the sabbath was past, Mary
Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had brought
sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very
early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the
sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among
themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the
sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was
rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the
sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed
in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he
saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which
was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where
they laid him" (Mark 16:1-6).
"Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to
rise from the dead the third day" (Luke 24:46).
"The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was
yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from
the sepulchre. Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter,
and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them,
They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not
where they have laid him ... For as yet they knew not the scripture,
that he must rise again from the dead" (John 20:1-9).
"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he
was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the
scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
"Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the
dead according to my gospel" (1 Timothy 2:8).
Christ: The Firstfruits
"And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstruits of
wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end"
(Exodus 34:22).
"For I know that my redeemer liveth,
and that he shall stand at the latter say upon the earth: And
though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall
I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall
behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me"
(Job:19:25-26).
"And many of them that sleep in the
dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to
shame and everlasting contempt" (Daniel 12:2).
"And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which
slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and
went into the holy city, and appeared unto many" (Matthew 27:52-53).
"For if we have been planted together
in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of
his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified
with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed ... Now if we be
dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death
hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died
unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but
alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord"" (Romans 6:3-11).
"But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits
of them that slept" (1 Corinthians 15:20).
"But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward
they that are Christ's at his coming" (1 Corinthians 15:23).
"These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These
were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to
the Lamb" (Revelation 14:4).
Baptism
"Know ye not, that so many of us as
were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as
Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even
so we also should walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:3-4).
Lent
AKA:
Weeping for Tammuz
"He said also unto me, Turn thee yet
again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do.
Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD's house which
was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for
Tammuz" (Ezekiel 8:13-14).
Easter
The
Queen of Heaven: Astarte, Ashtoreth, Ashtaroth, Isthar, Ishtar,
Eastre, Eostre, Ostrae,
Ashtaroth [6252]:
the name of a Sidonian deity / Ashtoreth [6253]: the
Phoenician goddess of love (and increase).
"[P]ut away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and
prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only" (1 Samuel
7:3).
"Seest thou not what they do in the
cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? The children
gather wood, and the fathers kindle a fire, and the women knead
their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out
drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger"
(Jeremiah 7:17-18).
"As for the word that thou hast
spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto
thee. But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth
out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of haven, and
to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our
fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in
the streets of Jerusalem: ... And when we burned incense to the
queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we
make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto
her, without our men?" (Jeremiah 44:16-19).
Hot
Cross Buns
"Seest thou not what they do in the
cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? The children
gather wood, and the fathers kindle a fire, and the women knead
their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out
drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger"
(Jeremiah 7:17-18).
"And when we burned incense to the
queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we
make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto
her, without our men?" (Jeremiah 44:19).
Sunrise
or Sunset?
"[T]hou shalt sacrifice the passover
at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou
camest forth out of Egypt. ... and thou shalt turn in the morning,
and go unto thy tents" (Deuteronomy 16:6-7).
"Then he said unto me, Hast thou
seen this, O son of man? turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see
greater abominations than these. And he brought me into the
inner court of the LORD's house, and, behold, at the door of the
temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five
and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and
their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the
east" (Ezekiel 8:15-16).
Acts
12:4 - Easter or Passover?
"Now about that time Herod the king
stretched fort his hand to vex certain of the church. And he
killed James the brother of John with the sword. And because
he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also.
(Then were the days of unleavened bread.) And when he had
apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four
quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring
him forth to the people" (Acts 12:1-4).
Obedience to the Lord's
Commands
"Whatsoever things
I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor
diminish from it" (Deuteronomy 12:32).
"They that worship him must worship
him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24).
"If ye love me,
keep my commandments" (John 14:15).
"I beseech you therefore, brethren,
by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable
service., And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed
by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good,
and acceptable, and perfect, will of God" (Romans 12:1-2).
"For ye are bought with a price:
therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are
God's" (1 Corinthians 6:20).
"Ye are bought with a price; be not
ye the servants of men" (1 Corinthians 7:23).
"Be ye not unequally yoked together
with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with
unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that
believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple
of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God
hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be
their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out
from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not
the unclean things; and I will receive you. And will be a
Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the
Lord Almighty" (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).
"Prove all things; hold fast that
which is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
"Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of
the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend
of the world is the enemy of God" (James 4:4)
In All Things - A
Christ Like Spirit
"One man esteemeth one day above
another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be
persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it
unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he
doth not regard it" (Romans 14:5-6).
"Let no man therefore judge you in
meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holy day, or of the new moon,
or of the sabbath days: Which are but a shadow of things to
come; but the body is of Christ" (Colossians 2:16-17).
"Jesus suffered on the cross
and died. On the third day He rose again according to the scriptures.
Nothing else matters. Absolutely nothing comes anywhere near the significance of
this historical event -
nothing political, nothing religious, nothing philosophical; nothing in an
entire world of violence and sin
offers so much hope than the assurance that the risen Christ lives, and so a new
world is coming -
one of perfect justice, peace, and righteousness"

"Behold, I make all things
new" (Revelation 21:5)
Thus saith the LORD,
Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask
for the old paths, where is the good way,
and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls
(Jeremiah 6:16)
