Castle Gaol
The castle was
originally built on the site of the older and ruined castle from
which only the town gallows were present in 1819. In 1820 work
commenced to build a Gaol resembling a castle. From an act for
penal reform the gaol was no longer used and therefor became what
it is now a museum for penal reform and local history.
Jedburgh is also
famous for it's strict way of dealing with crime. Colloquially
known as "Jethart Justice" the prisoner was first hung
then later questioned about their crimes.
