Built for the Augustinian monks this abbey has
withstood the test of time to some degree. Being situated on the
borderline it is remarkable how little damage has been done
through the acts of war. Within the visitor center adjacent to
the abbey there is a model detailing how the abbey would have
looked had it not been in a ruined state. It was here that the
Scottish King Alexander III was married in preference to Kelso
abbey some 12 miles east of Jedburgh. It was the same King
Alexander that through his death was to plunge Scotland into a
huge power struggle which eventually led to Robert the Bruce
claiming the throne.
