Minbari
Terms and
Names
- Alyt
Title given to the 2nd in command of a Minbari ship, especially when the
captain is not on board.
- Anla'shok
The Rangers. Tradition dictates that all members of the Anla'shok are
Minbari, although during the few years leading to and encompassing the
Shadow War humans were allowed to join. Once the war finished it was
decreed that any race may join the Anla'shok.
- Battle of the Line, The
The final conflict in the Earth-Minbari War. The Minbari bypassed many
colonies to attack Earth in a final assault. Earth mounted a defense
of 20,000 fighters but they could not hold the line against the Minbari.
While victory was certain, the Minbari suddenly surrendered after
discovering that some humans had a Minbari soul. Only 200 humans survived
the Battle of the Line, including Jeffrey Sinclair.
- The Black Star
The Minbari flagship destroyed by Captain John Sheridan during the Earth
-Minbari War. He sent a distress signal which lured the ship and three
heavy cruisers to their destruction after he'd mined an asteroid field.
Although the Black Star was preparing to open fire on the defenseless
ship, it was perceived by the Minbari as a dishonourable victory and
earned Sheridan the name of 'Starkiller'.
- Chudomo, Third Fain of
Noble and honoured sect within the religious caste which has served for over
500 years. Its members include Ashan, Lennier and Lovell.
- Cole, Marcus
A human member of the Anla'shok.
- Cole, William
A human member of the Anla'shok. Brother of Marcus Cole. Killed whilst
trying to warn Marcus of an impending Shadow attack.
- Data Crystals
The most common means of information storage. The Minbari provide many
of them for other races.
- denn'bok
Minbari fighting pike, the traditional weapon of the Anla'shok.
- denn'sha
Ritual fight to the death, whereby the Minbari involved agree to take
responsibility for their own death (should they lose), thereby removing
any responsibilty for their death from the opponent.

- 'De Farhurst'
Minbari phrase meaning 'I yield to your authority.'
- 'Drala Fi'
Minbari name for 'The Black Star'.
- Entil'zha
A word thought to be of Vorlon derivation, possibly meaning 'The One'.

- F'hurs
Minbari equivalent of Mayor.
- Fortress of Light
Delenn's term for the role of Babylon 5 in the Shadow War.
- Goks
Minbari equivalent of cats.
- Ingata, The
The War Cruiser used to carry Branmer's body back to the Homeworld in 2258.
- Interstellar Alliance
Newly formed alliance(2262) of races, including many of the League of Non-aligned
worlds, as well as all the major races (Minbari, Human, Narns and Centauri).
- 'In the Light of Two Moons'
A poem by Shal Mayan that took many years to write.
- Isil'zha veni
To the Future?
- Kosh
The first Vorlon ambassador to Babylon 5. He was killed by the Shadows
after Sheridan persuaded him to order the Vorlons to attack the Shadows in
Brakiri space.
- Mora'Dum
A minbari rite meaning 'the application of terror' whereby the person involved
must learn to face their own fears.
- 'Ni sec schlect slem wa'
Minbari phrase meaning 'I am your friend, in peace'.
- N'Kai
A word which appears in all 97 Minbari sub-tongues and dialects, but never
means the same thing twice.
- One, The
Name used by Zathras to refer to the galaxy's 'geat hope' during a terrible
war aginst the forces of darkness. Sinclair is 'The One' who was. Delenn,
'The One' who is, and Sheridan is 'The One' who will be.
- Ranger Pin
A special brooch worn by each and every Ranger, with a centre stone called
Isil'zha by the Minbari. When it is made, a Ranger pin is forged in the
white of a flame and then cooled in three bowls: one of holy water, one of
Minbari blood and the third of Human blood.
- Sakai, Catherine
Human fiancee of Ambassador Sinclair, who became lost in time when a
Shadow allies ship shot at her. The resultant blast directed her into a
time rift that closed soon afterwards. (Novel 9)
- Satai
Honourary title given to members of the Grey Council.
- Shag Toth
Minbari name for a Soul Hunter.
- Shai Alyt
Name give to Minbari captains.
- Sha'neyat
Roughly translated = death destroyer.
A potent liquid, of great symbolic significance. distilled from a
combination of flowers, fruits and grains. Deadly poison to Humans.
Used in certain Minbari religious ceremonies.
- Shi-Ki
Instillation ceremony of a new Minbari leader.
- Soul Hunters
A little known race, believed to be immortal. They can capture the soul
as the body dies and add it to their collection. For the Minbari belief
that souls reincarnate, this explains why they fear the Soul Hunter.
- Star Riders
A clan of the warrior caste. Neroon is a member of the Star Riders clan.
- The Tak'cha
An ancient alien race, seemingly wiped from the memory/records of the
minbari, Delenn knew nothing of them.
- Taralenn II
Minbari penal colony.
- Third Principal of Sentient Life, The
The Minbari belief that refers to 'the capacity for self-sacrifice: the
conscious ability to override evolution and self-preservation for a
cause, a friend or a loved one.'
- Ti'Lar
Minbari poem songs that attempt to prompt new ideas and recall old
memories.
- Trigati, The
Minbari war cruiser commanded by Sineval during the Earth-Minbari War.
After the ship disappeared into self-imposed exile it became a legend that
lasted 10 years.
- Triluminary
A mysterious object with more than one purpose. There are only 3 in
existence. It can be used to scan or restore a missing memory. Other
purposes include creating the Chrysalis cocoons of Delenn and Valen,
and stunning the guards who were protecting Branmer's body on Babylon 5.
- Tuzanor
A phrase in the ancient Na'sen dialect of the religious caste meaning
'The City of Sorrows'. It is said that 'to dream in the City of Sorrows'
means to dream of a better future. Said to have been Valen's favourite
place on Minbar.
- Ulkesh
The Vorlon ambassador to Minbar. Subsequently replaced Kosh as ambassador
to Babylon 5 after Kosh's death.
- Valen'tha
The War Cruiser aboard which the Grey Council reside.
- White Star ships
A revolutionary warship incorporating Minbari and Vorlon technology. It is
capable of making its own jumpgate, and is used by the religious caste and
the Anla'shok. It was built to fight against the Shadows in the Shadow War.
- Wind Swords
The most militant clan in the warrior caste. In return for sheltering the
last of the Dilgar race, Jha'dur, they were able to provide the Grey
Council with weapons she created at the start of the Earth-Minbari War.
- Zarwin
One of the Tak'cha, served valen, misunderstood the teachings of Valen
and ordered his race to attack the helpless races that weren't interested
in helping with either side of the last shadow war. He claimed that those
who didn't want to follow valen into fire, darkness and death didn't
DESERVE to follow and that instead they must precede him. Valen then
banished them from his presence and they returned to their homeworld,
although they never understood where they'd gone wrong.
- Zathras
An alien of unknown origin who travelled back 1000 years into the past with
Sinclair.
- Z'ondar
Tak'cha word meaning 'great one'.
