Entertaining and Informative Slide Shows

Most presentations last about 50 minutes, then time for questions and discussion. Very popular with schools, adults’ clubs, societies and after dinner entertainment.

1. Heritage Coast

An introduction to the North Yorkshire Heritage Coast, from Staithes to Scarborough. Including alum, shipwrecks, Whitby, smuggling, whaling, lifeboats, fishing, Bay Town, Ravenscar and Scarborough.

2. Captain Cook RN

Follows the son of the humble farm labourer from schoolboy to explorer in a vivid account of his life and work, which embraced navigation, astronomy, botany, ethnography and medicine as he roamed the seas on three epic voyages around the globe.

3. Vikings, Vicars & Vampires

Traces the development of Whitby, the Celtic Abbey of St. Hilda, the growth of the Norman Abbey, shipbuilding, alum working, whaling, the coming of the railways and tourism.

4. Pirates & Smugglers

Tales of pirates, who they were and how the highwaymen of the seven seas lived. A fascinating glimpse into the history and culture of the pirates. Smuggling - an episode in England's social history. What was smuggled, the methods used, and the characters involved in the 'black economy'.

5. Whaling

The glamour of life of the Arctic Whale hunters made the quarter deck of a whaler the ambition of many boys with salt in their blood. Capture the spirit, hopes and fears of those who sought to wrest a living from the dangerous seas amid the ice flows.

6. Maritime Heritage

The story and developments of ships that utilised Whitby Harbour from the marauding Viking longships to the modern 'steel shuttles' which unload at Endeavour wharf.

7. Devil's Island

The very name sends a shiver down your spine. Once part of France's most notorious prison settlements, lying ten miles off the South American coast, no amount of sunlit sea and tropical palm trees can quite dispel the ghosts. Re-kindle the atmosphere of the 'Dry Guillotine' and hear about Papillon - the one who got away.

8. Amazon Adventure

Mightiest of all rivers, the Amazon flows through the last great wilderness on earth. An area of virgin jungle the size of Europe, still largely unexplored. Fascinating tales of adventure from this hothouse region on the other side of the world.

9. Amazonian Indians

Indigenous peoples have lived in the rainforests for many generations without destroying it. Ancient city of stone, carved two millennia ago by the Nabataeans beckons from the sands of southern Jordan. Anchored in the cliffs from which it is carved, Petra still echoes with the mystery of the past.

16. Ancient Egypt

Visit the Land of the Pharaohs which produced the greatest pyramids, the riddle of the Sphinx and the treasures of Tutankhamon, a journey which still excerts a strong hold over the imagination.
