La Rochers Sculptes |
During the last decades of his life the hermit
priest Adolphe-Julien Foure (1839-1910) carved over 300 fantastic figures
and faces on the cliffs at Rotheneuf. The figures are said to represent the
pirates who terrorised the area in the 16th century. The effects of weather
and tide is starting to seriously damage them and many are now so faded
that they are blending back into the rock. So, if you want to see them, do
it soon !
Rotheneuf is a few miles east of St-Malo on the Brittany
coast of France.
